Trenchless methods
Trenchless sewer repair in Augusta: which no-dig method fits your lateral
Trenchless is not one method but a family of them, and a Augusta lateral may need more than one. This overview sorts the choices by the defect the camera finds, the pipe material, and how much of the yard, driveway and landscaping each one leaves alone.

Why no-dig methods matter so much in Augusta
A conventional sewer replacement opens a trench the full length of the lateral, and on a Augusta lot that trench runs under a concrete driveway, through fifty-year-old azaleas and crape myrtles, and down a hillside where the pipe may sit ten feet below grade by the time it reaches the street. Red clay spoil is heavy and slow to compact, so the restored driveway cracks and the lawn dips; granite or saprolite near the surface can turn a one-day dig into three. Trenchless methods exist to avoid that. They reuse the path of the existing pipe and confine digging to a cleanout or a pair of small pits, so what you own above the pipe stays where it is.
Three methods, sorted by defect
The camera inspection decides which trenchless method applies, and sometimes it decides that none does. The sorting is simpler than it sounds:
- Cured-in-place lining fits a pipe that still holds its round shape but leaks, cracks or admits roots at the joints. A resin-saturated tube is installed through the cleanout, inflated against the host and cured into a jointless new pipe wall rated for a fifty-year design life. It is the usual answer for root-infested terracotta and for corroded cast iron under a slab.
- Pipe bursting fits a pipe that has collapsed, flattened or is too small. A bursting head is pulled from an exit pit to an entry pit, breaking the old pipe outward while towing in fused HDPE. It is the answer for Orangeburg and for crushed clay.
- Sectional point repair fits a line with one or two bad joints and sound pipe elsewhere. A short sleeve of two to six feet is set at the defect and cured in place, leaving the rest of the pipe untouched.
What none of them can do is change the slope. A sag where water stands is corrected by excavation, and the rest of the line is then handled trenchlessly. The methods offered in this area are described on the Fletch Barney Trenchless, LLC trenchless repair page for Augusta.
How Georgia pipe materials steer the choice
The 1950s-to-1970s ranch houses that make up much of Augusta carry cast iron inside the foundation and vitrified clay outside it. Cast iron that has scaled and lost its floor but keeps intact upper walls lines well after descaling. Terracotta whose walls are sound but whose joints have been pulled open by swelling and shrinking kaolin clay is the textbook lining candidate, because the liner spans every joint at once. Orangeburg, found in some postwar subdivisions around Richmond County, has usually deformed too far to host a liner and is burst instead. PVC from the 1980s onward rarely fails structurally; when it does, a sectional sleeve or a short dig usually handles it.
Access points and the small amount of digging that remains
Trenchless does not mean no digging; it means digging where it does the least harm. Lining needs a cleanout, and if a Augusta house has none, a two-way cleanout is installed near the foundation first. Bursting needs an entry pit at one end and an exit pit at the other, each roughly the size of a doorway, and the installer chooses lawn or planting bed over paving whenever the alignment allows. On steep lots the downhill pit can be deep, which affects shoring and time. Before work starts, the contractor should mark every pit on the ground with you present, so there are no surprises about which shrubs move and which pavers come up.
Permits, locates and timing
Every method here requires a plumbing permit in Augusta, and reaching the tap at the main requires a right-of-way permit as well. A utility locate must be requested before any pit is opened; in older neighborhoods the gas, water and telecom lines often share the same corridor as the sewer. The practical effect is a short lead time of several days between agreeing to the work and starting it. Once underway, lining is a one-day job for a residential lateral, bursting one to two days, and a sectional repair often a half day. Summer thunderstorms in Augusta can delay a cure or flood an open pit, so the schedule should leave room for weather.
Comparing proposals
If you collect more than one proposal in Augusta, compare them on the same footage. A proposal that names the method, the start and end footage it covers, the access points, the restoration of any disturbed surface, the permit plan and the warranty is a proposal you can evaluate. One that says only "trenchless repair" with a total is not. The technical background on lining is maintained at the cured-in-place pipe reference, and installers verified against those standards appear at the directory of verified trenchless installers. Fletch Barney Trenchless, LLC provides the inspection video with its written scope so the two can be read together.

Questions we hear about trenchless sewer repair
Is trenchless always cheaper than digging?+
Not always, but it is usually cheaper once restoration is counted. A shallow lateral in open lawn can be dug and replaced economically. The same pipe under a Augusta driveway, behind a retaining wall or ten feet deep on a sloped lot costs far more to open and put back than to line or burst, which is where trenchless earns its place.
Can trenchless methods fix a belly in the line?+
No. A belly is a section that has settled below grade so water stands in it, and both lining and bursting follow the path of the existing pipe. The sag has to be excavated and re-bedded. The rest of the line can then be lined or burst, and combining a short dig with a trenchless run is common in Richmond County clay.
How long is the sewer out of service?+
For a liner, the line is typically down for a few hours during installation and cure and back in use the same day. Pipe bursting usually takes one day for a residential lateral, longer if the pits are deep or in rock. The installer should give you the outage window in writing so you can plan water use.
Will trenchless work reach the public main?+
Yes. Both lining and bursting are designed to run from the house connection to the tap at the main, and the right-of-way portion is often where the worst root intrusion lives. Working in the public right-of-way needs its own permit from the city or county, which the licensed contractor pulls as part of the job.
What should the camera show before I agree to a method?+
The material of the pipe, whether it is still round, where each defect sits on the distance counter, and whether water drains or stands. Those four facts decide between lining, bursting and a sectional repair. Ask Fletch Barney Trenchless, LLC to walk you through the footage with that checklist. Estimates are free; call now.
